AVUNCULAR DNA TEST

WHAT IS AN AVUNCULAR DNA TEST?

Sometimes a paternity test is needed, but the alleged father is deceased, incarcerated, or otherwise unavailable or unwilling to be tested. When this happens, the alleged father's biological brother or sister can participate in the testing to establish a DNA relationship. This test is known as an avuncular (aunt/uncle) DNA test. Results from this test can imply or exclude a DNA relationship between a child and an alleged father.

An avuncular DNA test can also be used as a substitute for a sibling DNA test. For example, if one of the possible siblings is not available or is unwilling to be tested, his/her biological child's DNA profile can be compared to the other possible sibling to determine if there is a DNA relationship.
